Is Whey Protein or Vegan Protein Best for Me?

We get asked all the time:

  • What is the difference between Whey Protein & Vegan Protein?
  • Which protein is best for me?

The short answer is - There are differences between between both types of protein, and the one that is best for you depends on a lot of factors.  Ultimately, it is up to you!

Some Factors that will influence which protein is best for you

  • Dietary restrictions
  • Taste preference
  • How you plan to use them - shakes, baked goods, meal replacements, etc...
  • When you plan to use them - post workout, healthy dessert, before bed, etc..
  • Macro requirements

For many years, Whey Protein was the gold standard for protein shakes. But over the years, many other options have become available, and one of the biggest is Vegan Proteins (as long as they contain all 9 essential amino acids, like ours does!).

More and more people have issues digesting dairy products, are vegan or vegetarian, or just want less animal proteins in their diet. Whatever the case may be, we wanted to run through the key differences so you can select the best protein for you.

Personally, I switch back and forth frequently between Whey Protein and Vegan Protein. I do this for a couple of reasons.

  1. I like both and go with the one I am craving.
  2. Over consumption of a single food product can potentially lead to a food sensitivity; so I switch it up from time to time to prevent this.
  3. Our Vegan Protein is amazing in smoothies and baked goods (Banana Spinach Protein Muffins & Vegan Banana Protein Pancakes).  When you add it to anything baked, such as muffins, pancakes, etc. it gives the food a fluffy texture and delicious taste!
  4. Our Whey Protein is amazing in smoothies as well as unbaked recipes (Buckeye BitesDark Chocolate Buckeye Bites & Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Cups).  It adds a nice vanilla flavor to anything!

 the bottom line

For most of us, it really doesn't matter which protein we choose - Whey Protein or Vegan Protein. Getting more protein in our diet is the important factor. So choose the protein that tastes the best for you and meets your dietary restrictions!

If you are an elite athlete or managing your diet at a very high level, then I suggest speaking with a dietitian about what proteins you should be consuming when, how much, and how often within the context of your overall diet and training protocol. If you are being specific about macros, the variability in protein/carbs/fat may help you choose one over the other.
